Build The Future FieldTrip · Skilled trades exploration

Build The Future

A hands-on field trip where students meet working trades professionals, try real tools and techniques, and discover that building, fixing, and making things is a respected — and in-demand — career path. Not every future runs through a four-year degree. Some run through a hard hat, a tool belt, and pride in work well done.

Students rotate through interactive stations led by working professionals, try basic techniques in a safe environment, and hear honest stories about apprenticeships, earning while learning, and building a life through meaningful work.

Another pathway worth knowing

Too many students leave school believing college is the only “successful” route. Build The Future challenges that narrative with facts: skilled trades offer strong wages, job security, entrepreneurship, and pride in work that communities depend on. Students hear it from people who chose this path — and love it.

Why it matters now

  • Millions of trade jobs go unfilled nationwide
  • Apprenticeships pay while you learn
  • Skills translate to ownership and entrepreneurship

What schools gain

  • Career exploration aligned to CTE and graduation plans
  • Community employer and union partnerships
  • Students who see more options — and more hope

Help us launch Build The Future

This experience is in development and fundraising now. Your gift or sponsorship removes barriers for schools that cannot fund transportation, materials, partner fees, and safety equipment on their own — and puts real trade careers in front of students who rarely get to try them.

Transportation & access

Bus grants and subsidies so distance and cost never block a school from participating.

Materials & safety

PPE, tools, consumables, and station kits for every student rotation.

Trades partners

Honoraria and coordination for working professionals who share their craft with students.

Launch & scale

Program development so Build The Future can reach more campuses and trade partners.

For donors

Why donate

Every dollar removes a barrier between a student and a trade career they may never have considered. Build The Future puts real tools, working professionals, and respected pathways in front of kids who rarely get to try them — and your gift makes that possible for schools that cannot fund it alone.

I always thought I had to go to college to make something of myself. Today I held a welding torch and talked to a guy who owns his own shop. That feels like a real future.

FAQ

Is this only for students who want to skip college?

No. Build The Future is about expanding options. Many trades professionals pursue further education, certifications, or business ownership. The goal is informed choice — not limiting anyone’s path.

Is it safe for students to use tools?

Yes. All stations are supervised by trained professionals with proper PPE, safety briefings, and age-appropriate activities. No student operates equipment without direct oversight.

Can this connect to our CTE program?

Absolutely. We coordinate with school CTE leads and local apprenticeship programs so the FieldTrip complements — not duplicates — what you already offer.

How can my organization sponsor a trip?

Trade unions, contractors, manufacturers, and foundations can fund a full school visit, underwrite transportation, or support the program launch. Visit our sponsors page or donate directly.
